How neurodivergence influences learning style, and what good tutoring does about it.

A student with ADHD who is struggling in school is a student whose cognitive profile does not match the assumptions embedded in the educational system they are operating in. That distinction matters more than it might first appear, because it changes what you do about it.
The term neurodivergence covers a range of profiles. In educational practice it most commonly refers to ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and autism spectrum conditions, but the diagnostic category matters less than the functional reality: these are students who process information differently, sustain and direct attention differently, and respond to different kinds of instructional structure. Tutoring for neurodivergent students works when it takes those differences seriously at the level of method, not just attitude.
What different profiles actually mean in a lesson
ADHD affects executive function: the cluster of cognitive capacities involved in planning, initiating, sustaining and switching attention. In a lesson, this shows up in specific and predictable ways. A student with ADHD may engage brilliantly during a fast-moving discussion and disengage sharply when asked to write something down. They may understand a concept quickly and then appear not to know it ten minutes later. These behaviours come from an attention system that operates on a different schedule from the one the lesson assumes, and they look very different once you understand that.
Dyslexia primarily affects phonological processing, which means the translation between written text and meaning is slower and more effortful than it is for non-dyslexic readers. In a lesson, this appears as slower reading under pressure, difficulty spelling accurately in real-time writing, and occasional word-finding gaps in spoken explanation despite strong underlying comprehension. The gap between what a dyslexic student knows and what their written output under timed conditions shows reflects the mismatch between assessment conditions and the way they process language, and is a poor measure of what they actually understand.
Autism spectrum conditions vary considerably between individuals, but many autistic students are highly systematic thinkers who respond well to explicit structure, clearly stated rules and predictable sequences. They may find ambiguously phrased questions harder than the underlying concept warrants, and they may need explicit teaching of the conventions embedded in exam language, commands such as "discuss" or "evaluate" that neurotypical students tend to absorb implicitly from exposure.
What good tutoring for neurodivergent students actually does
Good tutoring for neurodivergent students does not lower the standard. It changes the instructional approach while keeping the expectation the same. For a student with ADHD, this might mean shorter, more varied task segments within a session, explicit transitions between activities, and building retrieval practice in as a regular feature rather than an occasional revision tool. For a dyslexic student, it might mean doing comprehension orally before doing it in writing, using text-to-speech tools for reading-heavy subjects, and spending structured time on the specific exam conditions under which written output is most difficult.
The most important single thing a tutor can do for a neurodivergent student is understand their specific profile, the actual pattern of strengths and difficulties that appears in the work, rather than simply the diagnostic category. This takes time and requires active attention during lessons. It is the part of tutoring that one-to-one sessions make possible and that classroom teaching typically cannot accommodate.
Exam access arrangements
Many neurodivergent students are entitled to access arrangements in formal examinations: extra time, a reader, a scribe, rest breaks or use of a word processor. These are adjustments designed to ensure that assessment conditions do not systematically disadvantage students whose processing differs from the norm.
The process of applying for these arrangements involves an assessment by an educational psychologist or specialist teacher, and the application goes through the school or examination centre. We can advise on what arrangements are likely to be appropriate and what evidence is typically needed, though the formal application is a matter for the school. One practical note: waiting times for educational psychologist assessments are long in most areas. If your child has not yet been assessed and you think access arrangements might be relevant, it is worth beginning that process significantly earlier than you think necessary.
